01/ Overview
The route
From the Apennine Mountains to the Alps – the panoramic view from Monte Generoso is one of the most spectacular in Switzerland. “Fiore di Pietra” designed by architect Mario Botta is another highlight. Distinctive features of this area are the nevère, cylindrical stone structures once used to store milk.
The nine-kilometre circular hike begins at the Bellavista stop, following a mountain trail. The route initially leads through woodland before the terrain opens out into meadows and pastures. Monte Generoso increasingly takes centre stage along the way. Just over three and a half hours of walking should be allowed for the ascent of around 660 metres.
The mountain trail continues uphill, reaching the rocky summit area after just over two hours. At around 1,700 m, the highest point of the hike lies on Monte Generoso, a summit in the Lugano Prealps on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Here, the wooded slopes give way to open, partly rocky terrain.
Shortly after the summit, the route passes the Cappelletta della Madonna della Provvidenza. The Ristorante Generoso also lies close to the trail and makes a suitable place to stop. The descent then begins. Crossing open slopes and passing through sections of woodland, the mountain trail returns to Bellavista, where the stop is just a few steps from the end of the route.
