01/ Overview

The route

This leg leads from the picturesque vineyards around Mendrisio to modern Chiasso on the Italian border. It takes you on a journey through the natural landscapes of the Mottatal and Penz parks, passing by grapevines to the southernmost point in Switzerland: the hilltop village of Pedrinate.

From the Mendrisio stop, the route initially leads out of the built-up area. Before long, the trail follows the Roncaglia and enters the wooded hills of the Mendrisiotto. Open meadows and small settlements provide variety before the Locanda dei Mulini, located directly on the route, offers a first opportunity for a break.

The route continues via Castel di Sotto and through more woodland, gently rising and falling on the way to Seseglio. The more demanding section begins at the Vecchia Osteria Seseglio: the mountain trail climbs through the green hills and, towards the end of the ascent, reaches the highest point of the hike at around 550 metres.

The route then alternates once again between hiking trail and mountain trail. From Pedrinate, it leads predominantly downhill, finally emerging from the forest and returning to the built-up area. After around 14 kilometres and just over four hours, the hike ends in Chiasso; the Piazza Indipendenza stop is only a few steps from the destination.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
