01/ Overview
The route
A short geological trail leads from Morbio Superiore down into the Breggia Gorge. Exposed rocks reveal ancient geological strata before the route ends at Ghitello.
From the Morbio Superiore, Croce bus stop, it is only a few steps to the starting point in Morbio Superiore. At Mulin da Canaa, the trail begins almost at the highest point of the route, at around 350 m. It initially descends along a mountain trail, leaving the houses behind and crossing open ground and woodland towards the Breggia Gorge. Exposed rocks offer an insight into ancient geological strata. The geological trail is also listed in the Erlebnis Geologie directory.
After the steeper first section, the short hike continues along an easier hiking trail. Just off the route stands the Chiesa di San Pietro, also known as the Chiesa rossa because of its colour and home to one of the canton’s richest cycles of Gothic frescoes; the trail itself does not lead directly to the church. The houses of Morbio Inferiore then draw closer. A short ascent leads to Ghitello, where the route ends at the Ristorante al Ghitello. The Morbio Inferiore, Polenta bus stop is just under 200 m away.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
