01/ Overview
The route
Monte San Giorgio is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the fossil finds from the Triassic Period. These are on exhibit in the museum of Meride. Other highlights: the archaeological park in Tremona-Castello, the panoramic views from the summit, lovely Alp Brusino and the studio of local painter Fiorello Fiorini.
Near the Tremona, Gurnaga bus stop, the hike begins at the Chiesa dell’Assunta, Tremona’s parish church. The mostly white-red-white marked mountain trail initially descends to Meride before the long climb into the extensive forests of Monte San Giorgio begins.
With around 740 metres of ascent, this section requires a good level of fitness. The highest point of the route lies at around 1,030 m on the wooded flank of the mountain. The actual summit is not on the route. Monte San Giorgio is part of the UNESCO site of the same name and is flanked by two arms of Lake Lugano. The mountain trail then descends to Grotto Alpe di Brusino, a suitable place for a break about halfway along the route.
From Serpiano, the route once again leads through forest and across open meadows. Towards the end, the paths become wider, and the descent brings the hike back to Meride. After just over four hours, it ends directly at the Meride, Paese bus stop.
