01/ Overview
The route
Nearly 1'400 metres of ascent lead from Stans along a historic railway alignment, through forest and across alpine pastures to the Stanserhorn.
The Zentralbahn takes hikers from Luzern to Stans; the ascent of around five hours begins at the valley station of the Stanserhornbahn. The hiking trail initially passes through the village before following the route of the 1893 funicular. Via the Maria zum Schnee chapel and the Kälti intermediate station, the route soon climbs into the forest.
Above Kälti, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail continues steadily uphill. At Ebnet, the forest gradually gives way to meadows and alpine pastures. The Ahornhütte makes a good rest stop before the route continues climbing via Alp Blatti to Rinderalp. From there, paragliders and hang gliders can be seen taking off.
The ascent remains steep in the final section, leading through open terrain towards the Stanserhorn. After just under twelve kilometres and around 1'400 metres of ascent, the route reaches its highest point at approximately 1'840 m. The trail ends on the Stanserhorn beside the viewpoint and revolving restaurant, just a few steps from the mountain station.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
