01/ Overview
The route
A long ascent from Stans through the village, the Kniriwald and several alpine pastures. Almost 1,400 metres of ascent lead up to the Stanserhorn.
From the valley station of the Stanserhornbahn in Stans, an almost five-hour, virtually continuous ascent begins. After the Church of St Peter and Paul, the route leads across the Klostermatte to the Robinson playground, leaving the last houses behind.
In the Kniriwald, the mountain trail climbs steeply. Around 1,400 metres of ascent are spread over just under eleven kilometres, with scarcely any level ground for recovery. The route continues via Alp Kalcherli to the Ahornhütte, an ideal spot for a packed-lunch break. Beyond here, the forest increasingly gives way to meadows and alpine pastures. Alp Blatti marks the furthest point on the Stanserhorn before the route turns towards Rinderalp. Paragliders take off here, and with a little luck, hang-gliders can also be seen above the slopes.
The final ascent remains on the mountain trail and leads up to the highest point of the route at around 1,840 m. The viewpoint and the Stanserhorn revolving restaurant are located right by the destination. A few steps away is the Stanserhorn mountain station, from where the railway descends back into the valley.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
