01/ Overview
The route
This route links Nidwalden's political, historical, spiritual, geographical and topographical centers. Local history is the central theme.
From Stans railway station, the hiking trail leads through the town, past the Church of St Peter and Paul and via Oberdorf to Büren. Open meadows and pastures soon replace the built-up areas, with stretches of woodland adding variety. At 20 kilometres, around 1,450 metres of ascent and just over eight hours, this is a long day hike.
As the ascent continues, the trail narrows and becomes a mountain trail marked white-red-white. From Niederrickenbach, the route leads to Bleikigrat. The final ascent to Buochserhorn then follows. At 1,806 m, the isolated summit is also the highest point of the hike. It is the highest elevation located entirely within the canton of Nidwalden.
The long descent from the summit leads through open terrain and extensive stretches of woodland. As it approaches the valley floor, the trail broadens again. After the forest chapel, Buochs draws closer, and the hike ends not far from the Buochs, Post stop.
