Thurweg, Stage 2/8

This second stage of the Thurweg trail begins in the municipality of Nesslau and runs along the Thur river through multifaceted Toggenburg. Along the way, you experience a varied landscape with villages, meadows and wooded sections. The destination for this stage is the small town of Wattwil, which has a number of attractions.

From the Nesslau-Neu St. Johann, Bahnhof bus stop, the hiking trail leads through Nesslau. Shortly after the start, the route reaches its highest point at around 760 m; from there, gentle counter-ascents and a gradual descent set the course. Near the Inselikapelle, the trail briefly enters the forest before meadows and pastures open out once more.

After Krummenau, the route crosses open Toggenburg farmland, interspersed with hamlets, stretches of woodland and the first houses of the villages ahead. In Ebnat-Kappel, the Reformed church stands slightly off the route, a Baroque country church by Hans Ulrich Grubenmann. Marked in yellow throughout, the hiking trail has no alpine sections and continues down the valley in a steady succession of ascents and descents.

Wattwil draws closer via Ulisbach. The final kilometres increasingly pass between meadows and built-up areas until the route ends at Wattwil railway station after just over four hours.
