01/ Overview
The route
After a brief climb, the Höhenweg high trail crosses the border into the Linth region for the first time before descending the mountain towards Amden above Lake Walen. Back in Toggenburg territory, the stage ends at Oberchäseren 1,650 metres above sea level. Your scenery en route includes the Alpstein during your initial climb, followed by the Glärnisch and the Linth region and, when you arrive at your destination, a magnificent and lively alpine setting.
The hike begins on Selunalp, away from public transport; the nearest stop, Alt St. Johann, Starkenbach, is around 1.6 km away. A mountain path climbs steeply across open alpine pastures. Just a quarter of the way into the route, it reaches its highest point below Glattchamm at around 1,830 m.
Beyond the high point, the trail becomes gentler, continuing through broad pastures in a steady succession of ascents and descents. Around halfway, it crosses Vorder Höhi, the pass between Amden and Starkenbach. The waymarked hiking trail remains in open terrain for a long stretch before sections of woodland and a final passage on a narrower mountain path change its character.
After a good five hours, the hike ends at the alp in Oberchäseren. The total ascent amounts to around 950 metres. The destination is also away from public transport: the nearest stop, Niederschlag, is around 2.3 km away.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
