01/ Overview
The route
The rather long ascent from Stein to the Vorderen Höhe is finally rewarded with wonderful views of the Glarner mountain peaks. A diverse high-level hike leads around the Gulmen, across to the Mattstock and down to Amden.
From the Stein SG, Dorf bus stop, the hiking trail leads out of the village and soon climbs steeply. Meadows alternate with longer stretches of forest along a broad path. After around five kilometres, the highest point is reached near Vorder Höhi at just over 1,500 metres. The pass links Amden with Starkenbach; in total, the 14-kilometre route gains around 860 metres in elevation.
Beyond the pass, the trail continues through open pastures. Gulmen rises away from the route, while the trail undulates steadily towards Hinder Höhi. The longer descent begins there, initially between wooded areas, then once again across meadows and past scattered houses.
Towards the end, the trail approaches Amden and follows the Gfellbach for a short stretch. The first houses of the village are soon reached. Passing Restaurant Löwen, the final steps lead to the destination in the village centre; the Amden, Dorf bus stop is right beside it.
