01/ Overview

The route

This route starts in Ebnat-Kappel and leads along the idyllic banks of the River Thur to Wattwil. An easy route in the middle of an intact natural world, which thanks to the impressive mountains on the horizon offers fascinating scenery.

From Ebnat-Kappel railway station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially leads through the village and on to Kappel. At around 630 m, the starting point is already the highest point of the hike. From there, the route remains almost level, losing only a little elevation on the way to Wattwil. This makes for a short link through Toggenburg with no lengthy ascent.

Beyond Kappel, the houses recede. The trail crosses open meadows and pastures before reaching another built-up area at Ulisbach. Rather than sweeping viewpoints, this hike is defined by the alternation between open countryside and the villages of Toggenburg.

After around six kilometres, the houses of Wattwil become more closely spaced. The trail leads through the village and ends near Wattwil railway station. A little over an hour should be allowed for the entire route, which is almost completely flat.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
