01/ Overview
The route
The hilly countryside between Wattwil and Rapperswil is characterised by smaller and larger woodland areas and scattered farmsteads. Various beautiful sunken paths make this hike a memorable experience.
From Wattwil railway station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village and past Iberg Castle. The longest ascent comes right at the start: the route quickly gains height between open meadows and woodland. Near Unterer Lindberg, it reaches its highest point at around 990 m.
The trail then continues over Oberricken and through the gently undulating landscape of the St. Gallen hills. Pastures, small patches of woodland and settlements alternate along the way. Via Rüeterswil and St. Gallenkappel, the route continues steadily up and down towards Eschenbach. With a total distance of 28 kilometres and a hiking time of over seven hours, this straightforward route is primarily a test of endurance.
Towards the end, the settlements draw closer together. From Johannisberg, the trail descends to Jona and continues into the old town of Rapperswil. It passes the parish church of St. Johann and the castle, which stands on a rocky spur above Lake Zurich. Shortly afterwards, the hike ends directly at Rapperswil railway station.
