Thurweg, Stage 6/8

The sixth stage of the Thurweg trail starts in the small and lively Thurgau town of Weinfelden. It runs on well-maintained and natural paths along the Thur to the destination for the stage, Frauenfeld. Along the way, various structures, such as the wire rope bridge near Bussnang and the Zollhus Bridge near Eschikofen, offer insights into the history of the region.

From Weinfelden station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially leads out of the town and climbs gently. After just under two kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near Ottenberg at around 440 metres. From there, a leisurely succession of open meadows, pastures and stretches of woodland defines the long route westwards. It is the distance rather than the modest differences in elevation that characterises this hike.

Along the way, the trail skirts smaller settlements and briefly follows the Giesse. Later, the Brunewasser accompanies the route before the Untere Binnenkanal sets the course for several kilometres. Here, the terrain becomes flatter, with waterways, woodland and open areas shaping the landscape. The Wide barbecue area lies directly on the route and is a good place for a break.

Towards the end, the hiking trail passes the Waldturm and continues to Frauenfeld. After around 24 kilometres and just under six hours, the destination is reached. Frauenfeld station is only a few steps away.
