01/ Overview
The route
From the Waid along Höngg’s neighbourhood paths and down to Werdinsel, this city walk combines sweeping views of Zurich with vineyards, local history and traces of hydropower along the tailrace canal.
From the Zürich, Waidbadstrasse stop, the city walk climbs to the Waid. At the viewpoint, a panorama of the entire city unfolds; shortly afterwards, the route reaches its highest point near Waidberg at around 550 m. Paths then continue through woodland and across open ground on Hönggerberg.
The descent leads into the residential streets of Höngg. Along the way, stations on the themed trail tell the history of the neighbourhood, its fortifications, vineyards and glacial erratics. The route continues downhill past the Reformed Church of Höngg; the rectory, schoolhouse and local museum are also among the sites featured.
On the lower section, the Mühlehaldenbach accompanies the path for a short distance. At Werdinsel, the island’s former use and hydropower take centre stage; after passing the stormwater basin, the route briefly follows the tailrace canal. It then turns uphill again and ends after just under six kilometres at the Zürich, Frankental stop.
