01/ Overview
The route
Preserved factory buildings, new workplaces and green spaces tell the story of Zürich-West’s transformation on this urban walk – from Schiffbau to Hardbrücke.
From the Zürich, Schiffbau stop, it is only a few steps to the starting point at Schiffbau. This urban walk of just under four kilometres delves into the industrial history of Zürich-West. Preserved factory buildings and street names recall the area’s former use, while residential buildings, workplaces and its nightlife tradition reflect the district’s transformation.
Between Toni-Areal, Turbinenplatz and Löwenbräu, the route remains almost entirely level. Before long, Pfingstweidpark brings a touch of greenery to the densely built-up city. The route then continues through the Röntgenplatz neighbourhood and on to Josef-Areal. The parish church of St. Josef, the Roman Catholic parish church of the industrial district, stands directly on the route.
At Josefwiese, another larger green space opens up. Towards the end, the route leads through Gerold-Areal and Maag-Areal, returning to surroundings characterised by industrial buildings and railway tracks. After around an hour and a half, the walk ends a few steps from the Zürich Hardbrücke stop.
