01/ Overview

The route

Hike through Western Europe's largest primeval forest, above the most extensive cave system in Switzerland: on this circular trail through Bödmeren Forest in the Muota Valley, you'll discover ancient spruces, weeping silver firs with olive-coloured beards of lichen, and jagged rocks overgrown with moss.

The circular hike begins in Eigeliswald above the Muota Valley. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Bisisthal, Steinweid, is around 2 km away. From the start, the mountain trail marked in white-red-white climbs between open pastures and woodland. Around 460 metres of ascent are spread over the ten-kilometre circuit, which takes just over three hours in total.

After around four kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near Torstöckli, at approximately 1,690 m. Rather than heading for a summit, the trail follows the slopes, continuing in a succession of ascents and descents. Open pastures once again alternate with sections of woodland and also characterise the return route. This descends gradually to Eigeliswald, completing the circuit at the starting point. Despite its moderate length, the mountain trail throughout makes this a hike that requires sure-footedness.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
