01/ Overview
The route
A delightful hike over passes with attractive houses and stables lining the way as well as meadows and wetlands. Views to Bödmeren-Urwald (forest) above Muotatal, with the Höllloch cave system spreading out below ground. Of cultural interest: the Gasthaus Richisau (tavern).
From the Muotathal, Schulhaus bus stop, the hiking trail initially leads through the village and soon out into the countryside. Meadows and pastures characterise the long ascent, with stretches of forest providing shade in between. Above Stalden, the Hölloch lies a little off the route: this karst cave system has more than 212 kilometres of known passages and is one of the longest in Europe.
As the route gains altitude, the landscape opens up. After a good three hours, the trail approaches the Pragelkapelle and shortly afterwards reaches its highest point at around 1'550 m. A little later, it crosses the Pragelpass, which links Muotatal in the canton of Schwyz with Klöntal in the canton of Glarus.
On the other side, a long descent follows through Alpine pastures and forest. The route passes directly by Gasthaus Richisau and continues down the valley. Towards the end, it reaches Hinter Klöntal and Gasthaus zum Klöntal. The Klöntal, Plätz bus stop is a few steps further on.
