01/ Overview
The route
Seven hidden beetle children, climbing stations and the Balmli playground accompany the short descent from St. Karl to Illgau – a family trail through open meadows and woodland.
The Chäferliweg begins at the upper station of the Illgau–St. Karl cable car at just under 1,180 m, which is also the highest point of the route. A climbing wall awaits right beside the station. From there, the well-signposted hiking trail descends across open meadows before soon entering the forest.
Along the way, everything revolves around seven hidden beetle children. Climbing and balancing stations, a sound installation and the woodland adventure playground turn the descent into a small voyage of discovery. At the Balmli adventure and barbecue area, swings and hanging ropes invite a break, while a rope bridge leads up to the Eagle’s Nest.
From Balmli, the trail continues downhill, initially through forest and later once more across meadows to the first houses of Illgau. Over just under 3 km, the route descends around 370 metres. After approximately 50 minutes, it ends at the lower station of the Illgau–St. Karl cable car; the Illgau Dorf bus stop is immediately adjacent.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
