Mythenweg

Situated in the heart of Switzerland, Gross Mythen is reigning majestically above the village Schwyz. After a leisurely start from the top station Rotenflue the summit is reached by steep zigzags. The views from the top are ranging from the Alps to the base of Schwyz Valley, the lakes of Central Switzerland and across the Mittelland region.

The six-kilometre circular hike begins near the Rotenflue (Mythenregion) stop. The hiking trail crosses open meadows to Stäglerenegg and continues to the Bruder Klaus Chapel at Holzegg. This is the lowest point of the route; from here, the long counter-ascent begins. In total, the hike involves around 660 metres of ascent.

The mountain trail climbs steeply through forest and across open slopes. Higher up, the terrain becomes rockier, until the highest point is reached about halfway along the route at around 1,890 m. Here, the route passes very close to the Grosse Mythen. The Grosse Mythen and Kleine Mythen form the massif’s two striking rock pyramids; the subsidiary summit of Haggenspitz is part of the Kleine Mythen.

The mountain trail then descends again. Sections of forest alternate with pastures before the broader hiking trail returns to Stäglerenegg. From there, the route continues with gentler ups and downs back to Rotenflue; the Rotenflue (Mythenregion) stop is just a few steps farther on.
