01/ Overview
The route
With views of the primeval forest reserve of Bödmeren, through which Suvorov marched in flight from the French, the route leads from Muotatal along alp trails and an impressive stone-slab path in Schluecht over the Pragelpass to Richisau in the hinteren Klöntal valley.
From the Muotathal, hintere Brücke bus stop, the approximately six-hour ascent out of the valley begins. The yellow-marked hiking trail soon climbs through forest and across open pastures. Over the 19 kilometres, this adds up to a total ascent of around 1,100 metres.
After a good three hours, the Pragelpass draws closer. Near the pass, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,550 m. The pass links Muotatal in the canton of Schwyz with Klöntal in the canton of Glarus. The trail then continues on a long descent through the broad mountain landscape of Richisau. The route passes directly by Gasthaus Richisau before plunging more deeply into the forest once again.
Towards the end, the trail approaches Klöntalersee, a natural mountain lake whose level is additionally raised by an earthfill dam. After Gasthaus zum Klöntal, it is only a few more steps to Hinter Klöntal and the Klöntal, Plätz bus stop.
