Via Albula/Bernina

The hiking trail along the UNESCO World Heritage section of the Rhaetian Railway runs as near as possible to the Albula and Bernina railway line, regularly affording enchanting open views of an over 100-year-old total artwork in stunning Alpine scenery.

From Thusis railway station, the route leads through the Domleschg and over wooded slopes into the Albulatal. Near Mistail, it passes directly by St. Peter, Switzerland’s only unaltered three-apsed church. Villages, open pastures and woodland then alternate, mostly along mountain hiking trails marked in white-red-white. Via Filisur and Bergün/Bravuogn, the route climbs steadily to Lai da Palpuogna, which lies directly on the trail.

Beyond the lake, a long ascent leads to the highest point at just under 2,500 m. The trail descends into the Oberengadin, reaches Samedan and skirts the lakeshore in St. Moritz. Alternating between woodland and open valley floor, the traverse continues to Pontresina and climbs to the Berninapass. At Lago Bianco, the long descent via Alp Grüm and Cavaglia into Val Poschiavo begins.

At Le Prese, the trail reaches Lago di Poschiavo and follows its shore to Miralago. Beyond here, the valley becomes deeper and more densely populated; the route eventually leads via Brusio and Campocologno to Tirano. The finishing point is not served directly by public transport; Campocologno, Stazione, is around 3 km away.
