ViaSpluga

The ViaSpluga is a culturally historic hiking path which taps the history of the region around the Splügenpass. This direct route from southern Germany to Lombardy has linked the fortunes of the Rhaeto-Romanic, Walser and Lombardy people since the Middle Ages.

From Thusis railway station, the multi-day hike initially leads via Sils im Domleschg into the Schams valley. Mountain paths alternate between forest, open meadows and the villages on the valley slopes. In Zillis, the Romanesque Church of St Martin, with its famous painted ceiling, lies close to the route, before the trail continues up the valley via Donat and Andeer.

Beyond Andeer, the terrain becomes higher and more open. The route skirts the Sufnersee and reaches the Rheinwald via Sufers. Splügen marks the start of the decisive ascent: the mountain path climbs steeply until it reaches the highest point near the Splügen Pass at around 2,120 m. Here, the hike crosses from Switzerland into Italy.

On the southern side, a long descent follows through open slopes and forest. In total, the route covers around 68 km, with approximately 2,900 metres of ascent and just over 22 hours of hiking. The destination is Chiavenna. There is no nearby public transport stop; the Castasegna, Vecchia Dogana stop is around 9 km away.
