01/ Overview

The route

Old transit trail from the Albulatal valley into Schams. Views across to the Walser settlements on Heinzenberg. Through sparse larch forests and across alp pastures into the romantic Val Schons. Sgraffito adorns the stately dwelling houses of Zillis and Andeer, where therapeutic baths reward the weary hiker.

The starting point is just a few steps from the Obermutten, Dorf bus stop. Right at the beginning, the trail passes the Alpenrose. The mountain trail initially climbs to its highest point near the Muttner Höhi at around 1,900 m. The long descent into the Schams then begins.

Crossing open meadows and pastures, the route soon enters extensive woodland. The white-red-white marked mountain trail loses considerable elevation before the first houses appear at Reischen. There it passes directly by the Reformed church, which is listed as a protected monument of cantonal importance. Zillis is reached shortly afterwards.

On the valley floor, villages, stretches of woodland and open meadows alternate. Via Pignia, the trail passes directly by another listed Reformed church and the Beiz Caltgera. The final kilometres continue to Andeer with only minor changes in elevation. After a total of around 15 km and four hours, the hike ends near the Andeer, posta bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
