01/ Overview
The route
Climb to the scenic vantage point of Burg Hohenrätien (castle) and the prehistoric rock drawings at Crap Carschenna. Up a narrow trail to the forest clearing at Crocs. Flower-filled hay meadows on Muttner Berg. Typical Walser settlement of Obermutten with tiny timber church.
From Thusis railway station, the hike initially crosses the valley floor to Sils im Domleschg. The Reformed church stands in the village centre; the route then passes Ehrenfels Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop above the village. The long ascent begins beyond the last houses.
The mountain path, marked white-red-white, climbs steadily through the forest. About halfway up, it reaches Crap Carschenna, a viewpoint in the middle of the wooded slope. Beyond this point, the landscape continues to be shaped by forest, with increasingly open meadows and pastures. The total ascent of around 1,450 metres demands stamina; the climb defines almost the entire route.
Towards the end, the route briefly leaves the marked hiking trail network and reaches its highest point at just under 1,940 m. From there, the mountain path descends a short distance to Obermutten. The approximately five-hour hike ends at the Obermutten, Dorf bus stop.
