ViaBerna, Stage 6/20

You leave Biel along the Thielle and via the Nidau-Büren Canal. The path climbs through the forest to Jäissberg: a Chnebelburg, a Celtic wall and the Petinesca temple complex invite you to explore. The hike ends at the Old Aare, on secluded paths along watercourses and through floodplain forests in medieval Aarberg.

From the Biel/Bienne, Carterminal stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially passes through the urban surroundings of Biel and Nidau. Beyond Port, the longest ascent begins. The trail enters the forest on the Jäissberg and reaches the highest point of the hike there at around 610 m. Short open sections break up the woodland before the descent towards Studen. Käthis Beizli lies directly on the route.

After Studen, the built-up surroundings gradually recede. The trail follows the Sägebach for a short stretch, after which open meadows and patches of woodland define the flat landscape. In the final third, the Alte Aare becomes a constant companion, its course setting the direction towards Aarberg for several kilometres. Near the end, houses and roads reappear. After around 20 kilometres and approximately five hours, this varied and technically easy hike finishes near Aarberg railway station.
