ViaBerna, Stage 7/20

The stage from the sugar-producing town of Aarberg to Frauenkappelen is characterised by reservoirs, a power plant and nature reserves. Mostly along or above the wide course of the Aare, you reach Lake Wohlen and finally, via the wooded slopes, the village of Frauenkappelen a little above this.

From the Aarberg stop, the route first leads through the small town and past the Amthaus. The castle dates from the 13th century and now serves as the district administrative building. Woodland, open meadows and fields soon begin to alternate as the yellow-waymarked hiking trail undulates gently towards Niederried.

At the Niederried reservoir, the route runs directly beside the water. Beyond it, the tranquil succession of woodland, farmland and small settlements continues. Roughly halfway along, a quarry lake lies immediately beside the path before the hike continues through further hamlets.

Towards the end, the route meets Wohlensee, a reservoir on the Aare north-west of Bern. It then climbs once more, reaching its highest point at just over 600 m near Zälglihubel. A little later, the approximately 24-kilometre hike ends at the Frauenkappelen, Kirche stop. A little over six and a half hours should be allowed for the entire route.
