ViaFrancigena, Stage 6/10

The route leaves Aigle via the vineyard, reaches Gryonne and later the Rhone, which it crosses at Massongex, the ancient capital of Celtic Valais. Once in St. Maurice, the pilgrim has already covered exactly half the distance from Canterbury to Rome.

From Aigle railway station, the trail leads through the town and directly past Château d’Aigle. Once occupied by the Bernese, the complex now houses the Vine and Wine Museum. Beyond it, a distinct ascent begins: the yellow-waymarked hiking trail climbs through woodland and across open meadows. After around four kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at an elevation of about 650 m.

The trail descends to Ollon, then continues in gentle undulations through open farmland. It follows the Gryonne for around two kilometres. Stretches of woodland, pastures and small settlements alternate, while the route remains easily accessible throughout. Towards Massongex, the terrain becomes lower and flatter.

On the final section, wooded slopes once again draw closer. At the entrance to Saint-Maurice, the route passes Château de Saint-Maurice, also known as the Governors’ Castle. Shortly afterwards, the trail leads through the town to St-Maurice railway station. A good five hours should be allowed for the 19-kilometre hike.
