01/ Overview
The route
The route leads through the Baselbiet Tafeljura along the historic Hauenstein section. Along the track, built more than 150 years ago, you can discover many original constructions. The Ergolztal and Homburgertal valleys are home to impressive castles and fortress ruins as well as Switzerland's oldest railway bridges.
From Liestal railway station, the roughly 21-kilometre hike initially leads through the town before soon emerging into a landscape of alternating open fields and woodland. The fully waymarked trail continues without any technical difficulties via Itingen to Sissach. Schloss Ebenrain lies slightly off the route here; this late-Baroque country estate and its gardens rank among the most important of their kind in north-western Switzerland.
Beyond Sissach, villages, meadows and wooded hills alternate. The route gains around 660 metres in elevation overall, but the gradients are mostly gentle. After Häfelfingen, it leads to the Wannenegg barbecue site and deeper into the forest. Shortly before the Homburg ruins, the trail reaches its highest point at around 655 m. The remains of the walls lie directly beside the route and form a striking final highlight.
The trail then descends to Läufelfingen. The hike, lasting a good five and a half hours, ends at the railway station after a final section between forest, pastures and the edge of the settlement.
