Wildenstein – Rifenstein Weg

A romantic walk on a plateau bordered by cherry trees in the Basel region, taking the walker back to the Middle Ages with a visit to the castle of Schloss Wildenstein. The last third of the walk overlaps with the path of the Erlebnisweg Titterten and the Rifensteiner Sagenweg.

From Liestal railway station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially leads through the town. The houses soon give way to meadows and woodland as the route climbs steadily into the hills of the Baselbiet. Across open heights and through further stretches of forest, it reaches Wildenstein Castle in just over two hours.

The hilltop castle lies directly on the route. Alongside the castle complex in Burg im Leimental, it is the only surviving hilltop castle in the Baselbiet. Immediately afterwards, the forest becomes denser; close to the trail, the Sormattfall plunges between the trees. The hiking trail then continues uphill, reaching the highest point of the tour near Gugger at around 690 m.

The route now descends across meadows and through Titterten towards Reigoldswil. In the final stretch of forest, it follows the Fluegrabenbächli for a short distance. The first houses then come into view; after around four and a half hours, the hike ends at the village square in Reigoldswil, near the bus stop.
