01/ Overview
The route
Between the Lucerne hinterland and the Bernese Oberemmental, the trail leads away from traffic over hills and through wooded areas to Ufhusen and Huttwil. Picturesque farms and panoramic views of the Alps and, later, the Jura accompany the hikers.
From Willisau railway station, the hike first leads through the town and past Heiligblut church. The built-up area is soon left behind as the path enters the Willbrig forest. Open meadows, fields and wooded hills then shape the landscape. Following well-maintained hiking trails, the route climbs and descends steadily, with around 500 metres of ascent in total.
Oberwil is reached roughly halfway along the route. Continuing westwards, short stretches of woodland alternate with open farmland before the route passes through Ufhusen. The highest point of the hike then lies at around 740 metres. From here, the trail continues over gentle uplands towards Huttwil.
Towards the end, houses and roads draw closer again. A final descent leads into the town and to Huttwil railway station. After 16 kilometres and just over four hours, this varied hike through the Swiss Plateau ends here, its appeal lying in the constant alternation between woodland and open countryside.
