01/ Overview

The route

High-level hike from Laufen across the remote Jura plateaus between the Birs and Lützel rivers, past the pilgrimage church and castle ruins of Vorbourg, perched on a rocky spur above the Birs-Klus, to the Jura's capital, Delémont/Delsberg.

From Laufen railway station, the hike initially passes the Laufen waterfall and soon leaves the built-up area behind. Open meadows alternate with longer stretches of woodland as the well-maintained hiking trail climbs steadily. Beyond Nieder-Huggerwald, the highest point is reached near Räschberg at around 670 m. With a total ascent of around 700 metres, the undulating route across the Jura heights requires some stamina but remains technically straightforward.

In the second half, the trail runs through extensive forests to the Étang de la Réselle, its waters glinting between the trees. Via Soyhières, with its Église Saint-Étienne, the route approaches the Birs valley once more. It then climbs one final time to the ruins of the Château du Vorbourg, which stand on rocky ground above the narrow gorge. From there, the trail descends into the built-up area of Delémont and continues to the railway station. Just under six hours should be allowed for the 21-kilometre route.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
