ViaSuworow, Stage 4/11

The wonderful cultural landscapes with medieval buildings and stone arch bridges are a joy to behold along the route through the lower Reusstal valley. Totally in contrast to Suvorov and his troops, who only had French soldiers in sight.

The hike begins at the Wassen, Dorf bus stop, the highest point on the route at just over 900 m. The marked hiking trail leaves the village and soon reaches the Reuss. At the Pfaffensprung reservoir, the water comes right up to the path. From there, wooded slopes, open meadows and small settlements alternate. Despite the valley’s general direction, repeated counter-ascents add variation to the elevation profile.

After around three hours, the route reaches Amsteg. From here, it continues along the valley floor and via Silenen, mostly close to the Reuss. Stretches of woodland provide variety, while in between, views open up across the broad Urner Reuss valley. Towards the end, the trail moves away from the river and leads through increasingly built-up areas to Altdorf. The Altdorf UR, Telldenkmal bus stop is close to the destination. At around 28 kilometres, with roughly 600 metres of ascent and a hiking time of just over seven and a half hours, this easy but long tour is above all an endurance stage.
