01/ Overview
The route
The route starts at the historic Oberalp Pass. From here, you’ll dip into the cultural landscape of the Surselva region. This stage is a particular delight for plant lovers. But those more interested in geology will also be drawn to the crystal-rich mountain peaks.
The hike begins at Oberalppass railway station on the broad pass. The Oberalpsee lies a short distance off the route. The mountain trail, marked in white-red-white, initially climbs across open slopes and reaches its highest point at around 2,160 m after just over a kilometre.
The route then continues through meadows and pastures towards Milez, with constant ascents and descents. The long descent shapes the remainder of the route, although the climbs still add up to around 500 metres of elevation gain. The open high ground gradually gives way to alternating pastureland and sections of forest. The mountain trail requires care throughout, all the way down into the valley.
At Rueras, the hike reaches the inhabited valley floor. Via Zarcuns and Camischolas, the final section continues more gently to Sedrun. After around 14 kilometres and just over four hours, the tour ends at Sedrun railway station. With around 1,100 metres of descent, it is clearly a predominantly downhill route, but the intervening climbs keep it varied.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
