01/ Overview

The route

At over 2,000 metres above sea level, this hike leads across lush, scree-strewn meadows between massive slanting rock faces. Gentian, alpine roses and white cotton grass thrive around the high-moor lakes. One can cross the Rhine with three steps at its source; its water is even drinkable here.

The hike begins at Oberalppass railway station on the open pass. The mountain trail leads across alpine pastures into Val Maighels; a short section at the start lies outside the marked hiking trail network. The route gains height across open slopes until it reaches Lai da Tuma. The mountain lake is traversed by the Rein da Tuma.

Beyond the lake, the route continues in a steady succession of ascents and descents through open mountain terrain. Lai Urlaun remains a little off to one side, while the Maighelshütte also lies away from the route. This is followed by the longest ascent to Pass Maighels. Shortly before the pass, near Piz Purtgera at around 2'420 m, lies the highest point of the hike.

Beyond the pass, the trail quickly loses height and leads across broad slopes into the Unteralptal. After a good four and a half hours, the 13-kilometre hike ends at the Vermigelhütte on Sunnsbiel, around four kilometres from the nearest public transport stop at Gemsstock.
