01/ Overview
The route
Benedictine monk Placidus A. Spescha (1752 – 1833) once had this to say about Lake Toma: «This lake some 200 paces wide and 400 paces long is the basin from which the upper Rhine takes its source. It is a beautiful area, a worthy setting for the wellspring of such a river.»
The circular hike begins at Oberalppass railway station. The mountain trail soon climbs steeply across open slopes. As the altitude increases, the pastures give way to barren, rocky terrain. Near Pazolastock, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,740 m. By this stage, a large part of the approximately 900 metres of ascent has been completed.
The trail continues across rocky slopes to Badushütte SAC Manegg. This is followed by the descent to Lai da Tuma, a mountain lake situated at 2,344 m. The Rein da Tuma flows through the lake, which lies sheltered below Badus. From the lake, the route crosses open slopes back towards the pass. Near the end, a short section runs outside the marked hiking trail network before a mountain trail leads back to Oberalppass. After around ten kilometres and just under four and a half hours, this varied circular hike ends back at the railway station.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
