The trail leads alongside the Klöntalersee (lake) between mighty cliff faces down to Glarus. Anyone chancing a dip in the Klöntalsee may find the Russian war chest. It's reputed to have been sunk in the lake as the French attacked.

The hike begins at the Klöntal, Plätz bus stop in Hinter Klöntal. The yellow-marked trail initially climbs gently through woodland and across open meadows. After just under four kilometres, it reaches its highest point at around 860 metres. Shortly afterwards, the route runs directly alongside the Klöntalersee. This natural lake was formed by slope subsidence and a rockslide and is impounded by an earthfill dam.

From the lake, the 14-kilometre route is predominantly downhill. Wooded sections alternate with open terrain, and the Sitenwald barbecue site offers a possible place to rest along the way. Towards the end, the trail leaves the valley landscape and reaches increasingly built-up surroundings near Riedern. In Glarus, the route passes the Romanesque Revival town church, which was built after the fire of 1861 to replace its predecessor. A little later, the hike ends at Glarus railway station. A little over three and a half hours should be allowed for the route; the short ascent at the beginning is offset by a total descent of around 560 metres.
