ViaValtellina, Stage 3/8

From lively Davos through the peaceful Dischma and Susauna valleys into theEngadine. Passing many impressions left by past trade-route days, the section leads through almost untouched landscapes over the Scaletta-Pass, the highest point of the ViaValtellina.

The long crossing to S-chanf begins near the Davos Dorf stop. The trail leaves Davos and heads into the Dischmatal, accompanied for many kilometres by the Dischmabach. Between open meadows and pastures, the route continues up the valley to Dürrboden. This alp, with its mountain inn, lies on the historic Via Valtellina, once used to transport wine northwards from the Valtellina.

Beyond Dürrboden, the mountain trail marked in white-red-white becomes steeper. It climbs through open high-alpine terrain to the Scalettapass, the highest point of the route at just over 2,600 m. This is where the watershed between the Rhine and the Inn runs. After around 17 kilometres, roughly half the distance has also been completed.

The long descent follows Val Susauna into the Engadin. In Susauna, the route passes directly by the Reformed church before continuing on easier trails via Chapella. After a total of 33 kilometres and just over nine hours, the hike ends in S-chanf, a few steps from the Chesa cumünela stop.
