Walserweg, Stage 15/19

Once upon a time, Davos was a vast expanse of woodland. Then in around 1280 AD, twelve Walser farmsteads joined two Rhaeto-Romanic farmsteads, forming what is now the popular resort of Alpenstadt. The picturesque Stafelalp was the favoured retreat of the German painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. This route to Arosa keeps off the beaten track and boasts a magnificent mountain panorama.

From Davos Platz railway station, the route initially leads out of the town. The long ascent soon begins, first on a hiking trail and then mainly on a white-red-white waymarked mountain trail. Sections of forest alternate with open meadows and pastures. Stafelalp is reached after around five kilometres; beyond it, the landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky.

Climbing steadily, the mountain trail leads to Maienfelder Furgga. At around 2'440 m, the pass is also the highest point of the hike and connects the Landwassertal with the Schanfigg. Beyond it begins the long descent towards Arosa. Across open slopes and later once again through forest, the trail descends around 1'000 metres. Towards the end, the terrain becomes gentler and the mountain trail merges into a broader hiking trail. After 16 kilometres and around six hours, the hike ends in Arosa, just a few steps from the railway station.
