01/ Overview

The route

From the shore of Lake Lucerne, the route climbs via Kehrsiten to Bürgenstock – initially level beside the water, then on a steep mountain path through the forest.

From the Stansstad (See) stop, the route first passes through the village and continues to Harissen Bay. It then follows Lake Lucerne along a level lakeside road that was blasted into the rock in places. Along the way lies the former Fürigen military fortress, with its museum and extensive tunnel system. Cherry trees also thrive in the mild climate. After around four kilometres, the houses of Kehrsiten are reached.

The character of the hike now changes markedly. The mountain path climbs steeply through the forest, gaining almost all the route’s elevation over a short distance. Towards the end, a suspended stairway continues behind the hotels; its steel cables come from the old Stanserhorn railway. After just over two hours, the ascent ends at the Bürgenstock Resort at around 875 m, the highest point of the tour. The stop of the same name is located directly by the destination.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
