01/ Overview
The route
A short, strenuous ascent through mixed woodland and across open meadows, with views of Lucerne, Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains.
The route begins on the outskirts of Kriens at the Kriens (Pilatusbahn) stop. Following a yellow-waymarked hiking trail almost throughout, it quickly leaves the houses behind and climbs into mixed woodland. The ascent remains steady, gaining around 500 metres in elevation over just over three kilometres. Between the trees, views open up across Lucerne to Lake Lucerne and the mountains; along the way, a fountain with spring water provides a welcome opportunity for a break.
At Graustein, there is a choice of two routes. The steeper option climbs through meadows and areas of rough grassland. Woodland and open terrain then alternate as far as the heights around Langwase and Gruohubel. The final ascent leads to Krienseregg. At around 1,020 metres, the destination is also the highest point on the route. Circular trails in the nearby Drachenmoor offer the option of extending the walk; the hike itself ends at the Krienseregg stop.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
