01/ Overview

The route

Overlooking the luminous blue Lake Lucerne and the wooded hills that surround it, the path goes up and down well-paved trails through attractive forests. The Chapel Trail near Morschach is a reminder of the rich history of the region.

From Sisikon railway station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially leads out of the village. The route climbs steadily across open meadows and through wooded slopes. After just over three kilometres, it reaches its highest point at around 830 metres. The eight-kilometre hike involves around 500 metres of ascent in total.

The trail then continues with gentle ups and downs. The Franz-Xaverius Chapel stands directly on the route, with Morschach reached shortly afterwards. Open stretches alternate with shady woodland, giving the hike a varied rhythm. Axenstein offers an initial opportunity for a break before the trail plunges back into the forest.

Towards the end, the route leads through rocky surroundings to Chänzeli. The longer descent to Brunnen then begins. At the bottom, the houses draw closer together, and Lake Lucerne signals that the destination is near. After just over two and a half hours, the hike ends near the Brunnen See bus stop, only a few steps from the shore.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
