01/ Overview
The route
In the water meadow area the trail meanders pleasantly along the Aare, followed by the climb up to the splendid Wildegg Castle. Romantic stretches of forest lead on to the seat of the Habsburg family and finally to their memorial site, the Königsfelden Monastery.
From Aarau railway station, the continuously yellow-marked hiking trail leads out of the town and through the gentle landscape near Biberstein. Along the way, the route skirts the small Aarschächli. Woodland, open meadows and settlements alternate before the trail reaches Wildegg via Auenstein.
Wildegg Castle stands above the village on a rocky spur of the Chestenberg. The climb then continues. At around 570 m, the hike reaches its highest point. The route continues through the forest to the Panorama Thalheim viewpoint and then descends to Schinznach Bad.
The trail climbs once more, this time up the Wülpelsberg. At 505 m stands Habsburg Castle, the ancestral seat of the ruling dynasty of the same name. After this historic highlight, the route descends through woodland and built-up areas to Brugg. The approximately 22 km hike ends at the railway station after just under six hours.
