01/ Overview

The route

Alpine cheese sets the pace on this circular hike from Stoos: six tasting stops, open alpine pastures and a panoramic high point near Hengst accompany the route to alpine farms and cheese dairies.

From the mountain station of the funicular, the Alpine Cheese Trail leads out of Stoos. The almost eleven-kilometre circuit begins on a broad hiking trail through meadows and pastures. Stoos Hüttä and the valley station of the Klingenstock chairlift are left behind as the route continues towards the alpine farms. Alpine cheese takes centre stage at six stops; the Alpchäs Pass is valid for three tastings.

The route continues in a steady succession of ascents and descents via Alp Rinderchruteren and the Tröligen alpine cheese dairy. The terrain becomes more open near Näppänalp. A short section is unmarked, after which a mountain trail climbs more steeply. Near Hengst, the circuit reaches its highest point at around 1'560 m. Expansive alpine pastures characterise this section, while stretches of woodland become more frequent again only towards the end.

The descent leads to Alp Metzg and passes directly by Metzg-Hütte. Along the way, in addition to tastings, cheese platters with bread are also available, while chilled alpine cheese awaits in a cheese cabinet. The trail then descends back to the houses of Stoos and ends at the mountain station after just over three hours.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
