01/ Overview
The route
Lucerne and its surrounding communities can be viewed perfectly from the Sonnenberg. The Ränggschlucht gorge offers an insight into the regional geology. On the last section to Malters, you follow in the footsteps of St. James.
The hike begins at the Luzern Bahnhofquai stop, just a few steps from Lake Lucerne. The route follows the left bank of the Reuss past the Jesuit Church, soon leaving the city centre behind. The waymarked hiking trail climbs towards the Sonnenberg, initially between houses, then across open meadows and through woodland. By Hotel Sonnenberg, a good part of the ascent has been completed.
The trail continues westwards in a succession of climbs and descents. After around six kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at just under 800 m, at the western end of the Sonnenberg. A longer descent through the forest then follows. At Renggloch, the surroundings remain shady and green before the trail approaches settled areas again near St. Jost. It finally descends via Stegmättli to Malters. The 13-kilometre hike takes just under four hours and ends directly at the Malters, Emmenstrasse stop.
