01/ Overview
The route
Crowning stage over the Renggpass - past the KKL and Triebschen estate via the Horwer peninsula at the foot of Mount Pilatus. Passage over the Renggpass, the only overland link to Obwalden in the 1860s before the construction of the Brunigstrasse.
The 21-kilometre hike begins in the heart of the city at the Luzern Bahnhofquai stop. At Inseli, the route briefly touches the shore of Lake Lucerne before leaving the waterfront behind and climbing through the southern neighbourhoods. At the Seeblick viewpoint, the view opens up over the lake once more before the houses give way to the Grämliswald forest.
Through woodland and open meadows, the route continues in a steady succession of ascents and descents through Kastanienbaum and Ennethorw towards Pilatus. The frequent ups and downs add up to around 1,000 metres of elevation. Shortly before the Ränggpass, the route reaches its highest point at just under 900 m. A little further on, the Rengg chapel stands beside the path; at the pass, the descent begins on the Obwalden side.
Initially, the route remains in the forest. A short section follows a steeper mountain path before the way becomes easier again and descends to the first houses. After just under seven hours, the hike ends in Alpnachstad, a few steps from the Alpnachstad (See) stop.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
