01/ Overview
The route
From the Luzern lake basin, the Waldstätterweg crosses the Horw peninsula and the historic Renggpass to Alpnachstad—a long stage combining lakeshore, meadows and forest.
The route starts at the Luzern boat landing stage, just a few steps from the station quay, and passes the KKL. At Inseli, the path runs right beside Lake Lucerne. The Waldstätterweg then leaves the city and climbs to the Seeblick viewpoint. Across the Horw peninsula, the scenery alternates between meadows, Dickiwald forest and the houses of Kastanienbaum and Winkel.
After Ennethorw, the long ascent towards Pilatus begins. The path climbs through forest and later across open countryside. Near the Rengg-Kapelle, the hike reaches its highest point at around 870 metres. Shortly afterwards comes Renggpass, once the only overland link to Obwalden.
Beyond the pass, the broad hiking trail briefly becomes a steeper mountain path. Over a little more than three and a half kilometres, the route descends around 400 metres, emerging from the forest and continuing down to the first houses. After a total of just over six hours, the stage ends at Alpnachstad railway station.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
