Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 2/43

Fuorcla d’Angel is the name of the pass on this stage: it is not the gate into heaven, but the gateway to Parc Ela. Alp Flix, the high plateau that is this hike's destination, is one of the many gems in Switzerland's largest regional nature park. It is also dubbed the "Treasure Island of Biodiversity".

The starting point of this high-alpine mountain hike is the Jenatschhütte SAC, at 2,651 m the highest SAC hut in Graubünden. From its hill between Piz Picuogl and Piz Jenatsch, the mountain path climbs through increasingly rocky terrain to Fuorcla d'Agnel. Shortly afterwards, the route reaches its highest point at just under 3,000 m. By this point, a large proportion of the roughly 760 metres of ascent has already been completed.

The white-red-white waymarked path now continues through barren high-mountain terrain to Fuorcla digl Leget. The long descent is punctuated by short uphill sections, while the surroundings initially remain dominated by rock and scree. After Sela da Muttariel, the stony terrain gradually gives way to open meadows and pastures as the path loses height more rapidly.

The first houses appear at Salategnas. The final kilometres lead through the broad expanse of Alp Flix and down to Sur. After around 14 kilometres and a good five hours, the hike ends at the Sur GR Alp Flix, Tigias Hotel bus stop.
