01/ Overview
The route
From the Lucerne hinterland to St. Urban Abbey: the border trail combines forests and open farmland with far-reaching views of the Jura and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
From the Altbüron Post bus stop, the hiking trail leads out of the village and climbs towards Flue. Between forest and open farmland, it quickly gains elevation. After just over two kilometres, the highest point is reached at around 625 metres. In clear weather, the views extend to the Jura on one side and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau on the other.
The route then follows the border trail between the cantons of Lucerne and Bern. In Buechwald and Grosswald, shady stretches of forest alternate with meadows and pastures. An information panel recalls the historic transport route; later, the old country road leads towards St. Urban. Along the way, the trail passes Ober Berghof and gradually descends into the valley.
On the final section, the route briefly follows the Stempech, with the Mühlibach joining closer to the destination. In St. Urban, the Cistercian abbey, with its abbey church and red-domed towers, comes into view. A short while later, the hike ends at St. Urban railway station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
