01/ Overview
The route
Brown signposts lead from Pfaffnau to churches, chapels and field crosses. Along the way, the Pfaffnern accompanies the gently ascending circular trail through meadows, woodland and small villages.
The Chapel Trail begins at the village square in Pfaffnau, where buses from Reiden and Zell stop, and is marked by brown signposts. Right at the start, it passes the parish church of St. Vinzenz, where a brochure about the sacred buildings is available. The route then leaves the village and follows the Pfaffnern through meadows and fields towards Schöneich.
The trail climbs gently via Buttenried and the Baanwald. Wayside shrines and field crosses repeatedly echo the theme of the sacred trail along the way. After just over five kilometres, the highest point of the circular hike is reached near Isehuet at around 610 m. From there, the route descends gently to Roggliswil and St. Wendelinskapelle.
At Restaurant Ochsen, the route turns back into the Pfaffnerntal. The Pfaffnern remains close by for much of the way as the trail leads between meadows and the first houses of Pfaffnau back to the village square.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
