01/ Overview
The route
Pale limestone cliffs, a small upland moor and the panoramic Risete ridge characterise this demanding circular hike from Gfellen. The long ascent climbs to around 1,820 m, with ropes and chains securing some sections.
It is only a few steps from the Gfellen PostBus stop to the Bergrestaurant Gfellen, where the circular hike begins. Via Gfelleschilt, the trail climbs into the Riesetewald and continues up to Alp Risete. The alpine hut is a protected heritage building; beyond it, the mountain trail steepens and leads towards the pale limestone cliffs of the Risete ridge. Some sections are secured with ropes and chains.
Near Stäfeliflue, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,820 m. The summit itself lies off the trail. At the level of Blaue Tosse stand a summit cross and summit logbook; the exposed setting offers sweeping views across the Lucerne Pre-Alps. Below the cross lies a small upland moor dotted with mountain pines. Chamois and ibex can be spotted along the Risete ridge.
The descent leads via Älpeli and Mittlisthütte back into the forest. Towards the end, the first houses of Hintergfellen come into view before the route returns to the Bergrestaurant Gfellen after just over four hours.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
